With a big birthday on the horizon for Levi I got to thinking about what adventure we could take to make it really special for him. You don't turn 40 every day and there are some perks to having a winter birthday ... snow. Levi really enjoys skiing but doesn't get the opportunity very often so I set about planning a winter long weekend for him to remember.
A little detour on the way to the snow leads to a spot I'd always wanted to visit. It's a great and strange little place called Yarrangobilly so I thought this is our chance. It is a place truly in the middle of nowhere where caves were discovered in the nineteen hundreds as well as a natural hot spring. Some adventurous person thought to build accommodation there in about 1920 and turn the hot spring into a swimming pool. It's like stepping back in time to early Australia and totally worth the drive. It had been snowing this far out so we got our first view of the snow on the way there and set off on a little hike down to the thermal pool. It's a little piece of magic in the bush and we had so much fun bundling up and walking down together. We were prepared with our swimmers and although the water wasn't quite as hot as we would have liked, it was very fun to hop in for a winter swim and the big kids absolutely loved it. The little kids not so much but once that were back in clothes and warm they were happy as pie. But the magic of the place was something unreal. There was kangaroos watching on and all was peaceful and quiet. After a lovely swim and the fun of getting dressed again we slowly made our way back up the hill and bundled back in the car to carry on to the snow. This little adventure though marked the start of a really great weekend and one I will remember forever as being such a happy time together.
From Yarrangobilly we travelled on to our Cooma, then Jindabyne and on to our accommodation at Tinkersfield, 10 minutes from Thredbo. Our place, the Post Office was the most perfect winter escape cottage you could ask for. With a roaring wood fire to greet us we quickly made home exploring all the details and comforts of our home for the next few days. Flowers, bread, yogurt and muesli laid on the table. Big comfy beds, a spa and a beautiful view. Just perfect.
That night we headed down the road for a birthday dinner for Levi, where we ate well and enjoyed the cosy fire. Then on to bed for a good night's sleep before two big days of skiing for Levi, Finley and Primrose. The kids were in the skiing program and did so well. They loved it. Levi had a lesson in the morning both days and then was able to ski a few hours himself before picking the kids up and having some time with them. They came back every day worn out and happy, ready for dinner and to warm up by the fire. Quill, Lily and I spent our days taking little walks around the Tinkersfield property together, playing games, taking spa baths, napping, taking photo's and knitting by the fire. It was just lovely and we were all very happy together.
For our last day, we packed up our little Post Office, said goodbye and made our way to do some sledding at Perisher. It was a bit of a hike, literally, but we made it and everyone had some good runs down the hill, lots of laughs, crashes and fun.
It was a really special and memorable way to mark a special day for the main man of our family. Levi really is the best of men. He is a wonderful person through and through. He has such an interesting character, he is smart, fun, hard working, dedicated and full of integrity. Not many people are as lucky as the five of us. We get to know him and be with him and have our lives made all the better because of him. We love you Levi. Happy 40th Birthday.
