I love birthdays and as the children grow and their excitement for their birthdays grow, I get so much joy out of making a happy day for them from start to finish. We have instilled the 'party every second' year rule from my childhood and this year that mean't Finley had a family birthday, which I think is just as fun!
In the morning he woke to a doorway of balloons, stars and streamers and opened his first present, a scooter which was a big surprise. Then we set off to school, with a party lunch including fairy bread and a cupcake as well as a birthday badge so everyone would know this was his special day. His birthday happened to coincide with a fundraiser at school that day so he got to have his face painted and go to a dance party - pretty lucky!
His birthday wish was to go bowling but with all the lanes booked we went out to dinner instead after his gymnastics class and opening his last two presents - a blanket for his Beavers badges and a poke ball which he was pretty thrilled about. We saved the bowling for the next day so the birthday weekend continued. We had a good laugh when we arrived at bowling. Even though we live in a different country there really are just some things you expect to be exactly the same and bowling was one of them. But no. Ha ha. You can see from the pictures that the balls are really small and the pins are straight up and down. It is much harder than our bowling! It took Levi and I a minute to figure it all out and we thought it was hilarious that we are still surprised by differences two and a half years later. The kids had a great time and we had some fun with the disco lights going at the end.
We really enjoy all the great things that come with Finley getting older. He is coming into himself more and more. His confidence grows and he can recognise that even though he may feel nervous in situations at times, pushing through and being brave is always the way to go. And he does it. It's very powerful to see him try new things, really immerse himself in whatever he is doing and really give everything his best. He is reading incredibly well and loves it, he soaks up knowledge like a sponge and is eager to learn. He is an awesome bike rider now and throws himself into whatever sport he is playing. He likes sports that are highly active, he loves running, soccor and swims like a fish. One of his favourite Sunday activities is watching conference after church each week and he absolutely loves art and crafts, so we have tried to give him some opportunities to explore that.
I asked him what he wanted to accomplish before he turned 7 and he said that he wants to become an even better reader and be able to read the stories in the scriptures - what an awesome goal! As his mum I'm going to focus on keeping up all the cuddles and kisses for as long as possible and giving him responsibility over some simple tasks at home. We have some cool plans already for him this year. He is going to do two weeks of sailing over the summer as well as an art camp and swimming lessons. He is very excited that he will have a new baby brother or sister in September too right as he enters Grade 1 at school. He also can't wait for all of his cousins and aunties and uncles to arrive through August and September. It's pretty great to be a kid!
Happy Birthday our beautiful boy. We can hardly believe you have been ours for six whole years.
