Finley is nine ! How have so many years past? We are starting to get that feeling that we are on the doorstep of those tween and soon to be teen years. It does really feel like these last childhood days are upon us with backyard parties exchanged for late overs with pizza and a movie and little kids playing games to these nine year old talking about who knows what? Finley is taking it all in his stride. Our just turned nine year old is coming into his own.
Finley's actual birthday was a few days before his party. He celebrated the morning in our bed opening presents - mainly Minecraft themed with pancake breakfast to follow. It was the holidays so we went over to his friend Will Adams' place for an afternoon of playing Minecraft and then home for cake with our family. We'd just had the Johnson family come to stay the past weekend to celebrate our boys birthdays, so really it was Finley's birthday week. Finley got an early birthday present to go mountain biking with Alexander and we did lots of other fun things like dinner out and watching movies, over the weekend.
Then came Friday night for the big party. Finley had five of his good friends from school over - Tommy, Louis, Will, Damon and Ronan for a late over. We made pizza's, had a dance party, played a few games like statues, the chocolate game and the flour game - all huge hits. We took polaroid's and they jumped on the trampoline. They played hard and made a lot of noise and had the time of their lives. By the end of the night they were all pretty worn out, so we put on a movie and they chilled out until 9 pm. It was a great party, so much fun and Finley's friends were very generous with even more Minecraft toys including two Lego kits. Very lucky. It was wonderful to see Finley have so much fun with his friends and for us to see that nine year old boys are truly nine year old boys!
Every year I marvel to look back at photo's of Finley and see how much he has grown. He is growing up quick and changes without us even realising. He is becoming more independent and is pretty well there getting his homework, guitar practice and unpacking the dishwasher without being told by us. He is an excellent student - he loves maths and science and is still loving reading and can often be found cuddled up on the couch with a book. He's taken a real interest in cooking and baked a cake all on his own one morning while Levi and I were still in bed - it was good too! His chess game is coming along and Levi looks forward to having someone to challenge. It's lovely to see Finley's interests rise to the surface. He likes to be apart of everything and does really well in his running, swimming, soccer and horse riding.
Finley is a very good big brother. Lily just adores him and Quill and Primrose follow on his every word as he makes up games, builds forts, dresses up and uses his imagination to fill our house with noise and fun.. Finley really watches over Primrose at school and people often comment to me on how loving a brother his is. Finley is a great friend and really has a lot of love in his heart for people. He feels things deeply and has such a sensitive spirit.
It's amazing to see our little boy turn into this adventurous, full of life, fun loving nine year old. Finley has lots of natural talent and ability and we look forward to seeing where it all takes him. We love you Finley! Only one more year and you'll be a decade!
